Traditional dentures have a bad reputation for being uncomfortable, unreliable, and a poor replacement for natural teeth. Thankfully, advanced dental tools, treatment techniques, and materials have revolutionized modern dentures, putting them in a class of their own in terms of treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Modern dentures are highly customizable and designed with each patient's needs and treatment preferences in mind. Patients can be fitted for either full or partial dentures, meaning they can continue using their natural teeth whenever they are available and healthy.
2. Precision Design and Manufacturing
Traditional dentures were designed using physical dental molds that were not only uncomfortable for patients but also often delivered sloppy and imprecise results.
Today, modern dentures are designed and manufactured using state-of-the-art CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology. Instead of using trays and dental putty to collect dental impressions for creating a mold for dentures to be made, we now use a highly thorough and completely comfortable digital intraoral camera to take three-dimensional digital impressions. These digital images are then uploaded into powerful design software where our dentist can work with the patient to design their new dentures.
The dentures are then printed on a precision milling machine to create a dental prosthetic to the design's exact specifications.
Thanks to an incredibly precise design and manufacturing process, modern dentures offer patients a much more comfortable, secure, and natural-feeling fit than outdated, traditional dentures.
Modern dentures are not only designed with advanced technology and equipment, but they are also made with better materials. Depending on the type of dentures the patient is getting, they might include any combination of durable, comfortable, and natural-feeling materials such as acrylic, nylon, resin, and/or porcelain with an interior metal framework for additional strength.
Another advantage of modern dentures over traditional dentures is that they offer patients a wide variety of versatile treatment options. While patients can choose to wear regular dentures, secured in the mouth using a combination of precise fit, natural suction, and dental adhesives, they can also opt for even more natural-feeling dentures that are anchored in the mouth using strategically placed dental implants.
Implant-supported dentures can be designed to be permanent (all-on-x) or removable (snap-on/overdenture), but either way, they are secured to a system of dental implants inside the mouth. These dental implants hold the dentures in place so that patients never have to worry about the prosthetics slipping in their mouths or rubbing painfully against their gum tissues. With implant-supported dentures, care is easier, too. We might recommend the addition of a water flosser to the patient's oral hygiene routine, but otherwise, patients can continue brushing and flossing like normal.
Plus, implant-supported dentures also provide stimulation to the jawbone, helping to generate new bone generation that maintains the patient's bone structure and preserves the health of any remaining natural teeth.
